Financial leadership for owner-led businesses

Know if your business is actually working.

Structured bookkeeping, controllership, and payroll — one financial partner working with the same care and accountability as an in-house finance team, delivered without the in-house cost.

Brice Woodard
Who's behind this

Hi, I'm Brice.

No firm, no rotating staff, no handoff to whoever's available this month. When you call, you get me, the same person every time, who actually knows your business.

I'm a QuickBooks ProAdvisor across Bookkeeping, Level 1, Level 2, and Intuit Enterprise Suite, and CAS Foundation certified. Most of what I know about running the numbers on a small business came from actually doing it, over a decade spent working directly with owners and their finances, not from a classroom.

I started Matlock Accounting because too many owners get handed a spreadsheet once a month and told to figure out what it means. I'd rather just tell you straight what's working and what isn't.

Who this is for

Owner-led businesses that need real financial visibility — books, payroll, reporting — handled by one partner instead of a rotating cast of vendors
No full-time CFO on staff yet
Money moving through more than one system — QuickBooks plus Stripe, Square, Gusto, or similar — and nothing tying it together
You want a straight answer when you ask "is this actually working," not a spreadsheet you have to decode yourself
"I don't actually know if this business is working — and I'm scared to look."

— what most owners feel before their first call

STEP ONE — FREE

The books health check

30 minutes. Send your last 3 months of statements or QuickBooks access. I hand you a one-page, plain-English summary of exactly what's wrong — no pitch attached. You keep it either way.

IF YOU WANT IT FIXED

An ongoing partnership

I connect everything your money moves through, keep your books straight every month, and turn financial data into decisions you can actually act on.

Introducing Pulse

The connective layer underneath everything.

Three things happening at once, not one dashboard bolted onto your books.

01

Connect

Every financial system your money actually moves through — QuickBooks, Stripe, Square, Gusto, bank feeds, whatever you're using — pulled into one place instead of five disconnected logins.

02

Context

A running log of what's actually happening in the business — a new hire, a one-time expense, a seasonal dip — so the numbers are read with the full picture, not blind.

03

Query

Ask Pulse a question about your own business in plain English, anytime, and get an answer sourced from your real data — not a canned response, not a wait for the next monthly report.

Common questions

I already have an accountant. Does this replace them?

If "my accountant" means whoever handles your bookkeeping and monthly numbers, yes, that's exactly what this replaces, and does better. What it doesn't replace is your CPA for filing the actual tax return. Keep that relationship. I make sure the books feeding into it are accurate and current all year, so tax season stops being a scramble for both of you.

How is this different from just hiring a bookkeeper?

An in-house hire is a salaried employee you train, manage, and cover for when they're out. This is a dedicated partner who already has the systems and process in place, billed at a flat monthly rate, with the same accountability as someone on staff — without the overhead of one.

What if my books are already a mess?

That's exactly what the free health check is for. We'll scope a one-time cleanup separately before moving to a monthly plan, so pricing stays honest about the actual starting point.

Is my financial data secure?

Yes. Everything runs through the same cloud-based, bank-grade platforms your bank and accountant already trust — no spreadsheets emailed back and forth, no passwords shared over text.

What systems do you work with?

QuickBooks is the recommendation — I'm a certified ProAdvisor — but I've also worked in Xero and whatever else a business is already running. If it's new to me, it gets learned before it becomes your problem.
